A light bulb box can show lumens, watts, color temperature, rated life, and cost in one small panel. The numbers look related, but they do different jobs. Treating watts as brightness was once a convenient shortcut for one familiar lamp technology; it is not a dependable way to compare modern LEDs.
Lumens describe output
Lumens are the amount of visible light a source emits in all directions. A higher lumen value generally means more total light, but it does not tell you where that light lands. An 800-lumen frosted bulb, an 800-lumen narrow spotlight, and an 800-lumen shaded table lamp can create very different rooms.
The FTC’s consumer guidance makes the practical distinction clear: shop for brightness in lumens and read watts as energy use. That is why our calculator asks for the actual lumen output of the fixture or bulb rather than translating an old incandescent wattage into a supposedly exact LED value.
Lux describes light arriving at a surface
Lux is one lumen per square metre. It helps describe how much light reaches a desk, counter, floor, or other working plane. Foot-candles express the same kind of quantity in imperial units; one foot-candle is about 10.764 lux.
A target illuminance is a planning input, not a universal truth. A relaxed bedroom, a kitchen worktop, and detailed craft work may call for different levels. Age, contrast, finish, glare, daylight, and personal preference matter, so Glow & Gauge keeps the target editable and shows the assumption beside the result.
A lumen total is not a promise of lux at every point. Only fixture photometry and a real room model can show distribution with confidence.
Watts describe electrical power
Watts tell you how quickly a light uses electrical energy. Divide lumens by watts to get luminous efficacy, a useful comparison of output per unit of power. Efficacy still cannot tell you whether the beam, color, dimming, flicker, or glare suits your room.
For operating cost, use the wattage printed for the actual product. Multiply watts by quantity and operating hours, then divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours. Apply your own electricity rate rather than a national default that may be wrong for your home.
Use the three numbers in sequence
Start with the room and the visual task. Choose an adjustable lux starting point, estimate a lumen range, then check whether the fixtures deliver those lumens in a suitable pattern. Finally compare watts and controls for energy use.
This sequence resists the common mistake of buying a highly efficient lamp that is bright enough on paper but sends light to the wrong place. It also leaves room for layered lighting: ambient light can be modest when task and accent layers do their own work.
Use lumens for output, lux or foot-candles for light arriving at a surface, and watts for power. None of the three replaces beam data or an on-site check.
